How a home battery stores and uses energy

What is a residential battery?

A residential battery stores electricity so it can be used later. It is usually charged by surplus solar energy during the day and can help power the home when solar production falls in the evening or overnight.

A battery is not usually a generator. It stores energy produced by the solar system or, depending on the system settings and tariff, energy supplied from the grid.

Where does the battery fit?

  1. During the day: Solar energy supplies the home first.
  2. When there is surplus solar: The extra energy can charge the battery.
  3. In the evening: The battery can discharge and help power the home.
  4. When solar and battery are not enough: The home imports the remaining energy from the grid.
  5. When the battery is full: Extra solar may be exported to the grid, depending on system and network settings.

How does a battery charge and discharge?

When solar panels produce more energy than the home is using, the system can send the surplus to the battery. Later, when the home needs more energy than the panels are producing, the battery can release stored energy back through the inverter for the home to use.

What can a battery help with?

  • Supporting selected circuits during an outage when backup has been designed into the system

What affects the right battery size?

The biggest battery is not always the best choice. The right size depends on your electricity use, when you are home, your solar system, your tariff, your budget and whether backup power is important.

It is also important to consider the battery’s usable capacity and power output. Usable capacity is how much energy you can normally use. Power output is how much electricity the battery can provide at one time.

What happens during a blackout?

A standard grid-connected solar system normally switches off during a power outage for safety. A battery system can be designed to provide backup to selected circuits, but this requires compatible equipment and specific wiring. A battery does not automatically keep the whole home powered.

Can a battery make a home independent from the grid?

Usually not completely. A battery can reduce grid imports and provide backup in some situations, but the home may still need the grid during extended periods of low solar production or unusually high demand.
