How solar electricity becomes usable power in your home

What is an inverter?


An inverter is one of the key parts of a solar system. Solar panels produce direct current electricity, known as DC. Most household appliances use alternating current, or AC. The inverter converts the panel electricity into the form your home can use.

It also monitors the system and helps direct energy between the solar panels, your home, the battery and the electricity grid.

The power chain


  1. Solar panels: Sunlight hits the panels and they produce DC electricity.
  2. Inverter: The inverter converts DC into AC electricity.
  3. Your home: Your appliances use available solar energy.
  4. Battery or grid: Surplus energy may charge a battery or be exported. If solar is not enough, energy comes from the battery or the grid.

How does a string inverter work?


A string inverter connects groups of solar panels together in “strings”. The electricity from those panel groups flows to a central inverter, which converts it into AC electricity for the home.

String systems are common and can work well where the roof has a straightforward layout, consistent sunlight and limited shading. The panel layout and roof conditions still need to be assessed carefully.

How does a hybrid inverter work?


A hybrid inverter performs the normal solar conversion but can also manage a compatible battery. It can coordinate solar production, household consumption and battery charging or discharge in one system.

Hybrid inverters are often considered when a battery is being installed now or when the homeowner wants a more integrated, battery-ready design.

Does a hybrid inverter automatically provide backup?


No. Backup power requires compatible equipment, correct wiring and a clear decision about which circuits should remain powered during an outage. A battery-ready or hybrid inverter does not automatically mean the whole home will stay on.
