NSW Home Energy Saver Program: Zero-Interest Loans for Solar and Batteries

NSW Home Energy Saver Program: Zero-Interest Loans for Solar and Batteries If you’ve been thinking about going solar but the upfront cost has held you back, there’s never been a better time to act. The NSW Government has launched a $557 million program that makes solar panels, home batteries, and other energy upgrades more affordable than ever. This article breaks down what’s available, who qualifies, and what you need to know before you apply. What Is the NSW Home Energy Saver Program? The NSW Home Energy Saver Program is the state government’s new initiative to help eligible households reduce upfront costs when upgrading their home’s energy performance. Launched on 17 June 2026, the program offers zero-interest loans of up to $15,000, repayable over up to 10 years. There is no interest charged — ever. You borrow the money, you pay back exactly what you borrow, nothing more. Backed by $480 million in funding, the program is designed to support more than 32,000 NSW households — and it’s open right now. What upgrades are covered? Rooftop solar panels Home battery storage systems Heat pump hot water systems Induction cooktops Energy-efficient air conditioning Insulation and draught-proofing For Central Coast and Newcastle homeowners, this is a significant opportunity to slash power bills with minimal financial risk. Who Is Eligible? To qualify for the NSW Home Energy Saver zero-interest loan, your household needs to have a combined taxable income of $210,000 or less per year. That covers the vast majority of NSW households — including most families in the Central Coast and Newcastle regions. Key eligibility requirements: NSW resident Combined household income under $210,000/year Installing an approved upgrade at your home Full eligibility details are confirmed through the official NSW Government application process at energy.nsw.gov.au. Lower-Income Households: Extra Support Available For households earning under $80,000/year — or those who hold an eligible concession card — the NSW Government is set to offer targeted discounts of up to $4,000 later in 2026. This is separate from the interest-free loan and sits on top of it, meaning eligible low-income households could access both a discount and a zero-interest loan — further reducing what you’d actually need to repay. If this may apply to you, it’s worth checking your eligibility now so you’re ready when that additional support opens. How Do Repayments Work? The loan is repaid over up to 10 years with zero interest. There are no hidden fees, no rate rises, and every dollar you repay goes directly off the principal. For context, a typical 10kW solar and battery system in our area saves most households $2,000–$3,500 per year on electricity bills. On a $15,000 loan over 10 years, your repayments would be around $1,500/year — meaning most households are saving more than they’re repaying, from year one. The Federal Battery Rebate: Stack Your Savings On top of the NSW program, there’s a separate federal government initiative worth knowing about. From 1 July 2025, the Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount of around 30% on eligible home battery systems, applied at the point of installation. This is separate from the NSW loan — you can use both. Without Incentives With Federal Battery Rebate With NSW Loan on Top Pay full system cost upfront ~30% off battery cost at install Remaining balance over 10 years, 0% interest The result: a significantly lower upfront payment, no interest, and electricity bill savings that typically outpace repayments from day one. Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) When you install a solar system, you’re also eligible for STCs — a federal rebate that your installer applies on your behalf at the time of purchase. For a typical 10kW system in the Central Coast or Newcastle area, this reduces the purchase price by thousands of dollars before anything else is applied. At Zeneco Energy, we handle the STC paperwork as part of every installation. You don’t need to do anything — the saving is already built into your quote. What Products Are Eligible? Not every solar or battery product qualifies under the program. Approved systems must: Use products listed on the government’s approved products register Be installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installer Meet minimum performance and quality requirements At Zeneco Energy, we’re CEC-accredited and only use quality-tested panels, inverters, and batteries from trusted brands — including Jinko, Aiko, Sigenergy, Sungrow, and BYD. Every system we install is designed to meet or exceed program requirements. How to Apply Get a quote — We assess your home, roof, and energy usage and design a tailored system Confirm eligibility — We walk you through the program criteria and identify any additional incentives you qualify for Apply via the NSW Government portal — Applications are submitted online through the official NSW Home Energy Saver program page Approve and install — Once approved, we schedule your installation and handle the rest The program is open now, but funding is finite. With $480 million allocated to support just over 32,000 households, demand is expected to be high. Getting your quote locked in sooner rather than later puts you in the best position. Frequently Asked Questions Can I use this for a battery only (no solar)? Yes. If you already have solar panels installed, you can apply the loan toward a battery system on its own — and potentially combine it with the federal 30% battery rebate for even greater savings. Do I need to apply before getting a quote? No. Get your quote first — you’ll need the system details and cost when you apply. Is there a credit check? The program is income-assessed through the NSW Government’s process. It’s not a traditional bank loan, so the assessment approach is different. Full details are available on the official government page. What happens if I sell my home? The loan is tied to you as the borrower. If you sell the property, the remaining balance remains your responsibility — though a quality solar and battery system typically adds value to your home that

nsw-battery-rebate-2024-install-solar-and-battery-now-and-save

We have been waiting quite some time and as I have told our existing customers, a rebate was due and it’s finally here…. well almost. The NSW Government have finally announced new incentives to install residential battery storage, called the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme. As of November 1st 2024, you will be available to take advantage of installing solar and battery with the existing solar rebate and the new battery rebate or adding a battery to an existing system. The three main reasons for this are: To make batteries more affordable To take the strain on the existing infrastructure off at peak time for solar. Continue to reduce emission targets and reach net zero by 2050 The two incentives are: between $1600 to $2400 off the up-front installation costs of a battery for homes and businesses with existing solar, depending on the size of the battery between $250 to $400 for connecting your household or business battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This incentive is available twice, a minimum of 3 years apart. For the example….. If you install a 13.2kW solar system, with the current STC price of $38.50, you will receive $4889.50 off the total price of solar… Now adding a battery to this on or after Nov 1st could save you an additional $2400 plus if you sign up to a VPP a further $400. Total savings… $7689.50 Now this is somewhat speculative because we are unsure on what storage size will apply to the highest rebate as is the same with the VPP connection however the variable between the lowest and highest incentives is only $950. What the hell is a VPP? A VPP or Virtual Power Plant, is essentially an operator who has control over their customer’s batteries and charges/discharges them as required by the grid. This helps to avoid disruptions and disturbances with grid outages. To gain access to the second incentive, the customer must sign up to a VPP. Most VPPs have specific brands of batteries you need to install to join. We will have another article about VPPs and options available. Who is Eligible? There is a few boxes to tick to be able to claim but essentially anyone with an existing solar system without a battery connected to it qualifies and everyone without any solar also qualifies. You CANNOT claim an existing battery installed prior to Nov 1st. The only way to receive any incentive with an existing battery installed is join a VPP starting Nov 1st. Eligibility for new battery installations ($1600-$2400) Have an existing solar system without battery storage Battery must be between 2-28kWh. Install an approved battery from the product list as specified by the scheme administrator (yet to receive this list) Must be internet connectable and controllable by a Demand Response Aggregator. Battery must have a 10 year warranty with atleast 70% retained storage after this period. Be connected to the grid (offgrid jobs do not qualify) Equipment warranty must define the normal use conditions during the operation of the End-User Equipment as not being less than: a. A minimum ambient temperature range of -10 °C to 50 °C b. A minimum warranted throughput of 3.65 MWh per kWh of Usable Battery Capacity Eligibility for VPP incentive ($250-400) Have an existing solar and battery system installed There must be no life support systems used on site Demand Response Aggregator are grid operators who reduce or shift the demand for electricity or to help keep the grid stable. How do I book my installation with Zeneco? Contact us and we can help determine whether the option is right for you and confirm your availability. There are a few key factors that will determine whether a battery is right for you, we can explain them.
