Big Battery Savings Are Coming – Get Ready to Save Thousands
Starting 1 July 2025, Australian homeowners and small businesses will be able to slash the cost of installing a home battery by around 30% under the new $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
This is great news if you have solar panels – or are planning to get them – and want to store your solar energy to use at night or during blackouts. Here’s how it works:
💰 How Much Can You Save?
The government is offering a discount worth around:
- $372 per kWh of battery capacity in 2025
- That’s up to $18,600 off a 50 kWh battery (the maximum eligible discount)
- Even smaller batteries (like 10 kWh) can get you a $3,720 discount
These savings will reduce slightly each year until 2030, so getting in early means maximising your rebate.
| Year | 2025 | 2026 | 2027 | 2028 | 2029 | 2030 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Estimated value per kWh | $372 | $336 | $296 | $260 | $224 | $188 |
| STC factor | 9.3 | 8.4 | 7.4 | 6.5 | 5.6 | 4.7 |
🔋 What Type of Batteries Qualify?
To be eligible for the discount:
- The battery must store between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
- You can get the rebate for up to 50 kWh of usable battery capacity
- It must be installed by an accredited installer
- It must be paired with a solar PV system (existing or new)
This program supports batteries whether you’re connected to the grid or off-grid – perfect for both city homes and remote properties.
🌱 Why Add a Battery?
- Store your solar power and use it at night instead of drawing from the grid
- Protect against rising energy costs
- Get peace of mind during blackouts
- Reduce demand on the energy network, which helps lower costs for everyone
⚡ Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Ready
If your battery is on the grid, it must be ready to connect to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) – meaning it can respond to electricity demand and help stabilise the grid. You don’t have to join a VPP, but your battery must be capable of doing so.
📅 When Can You Install?
You’ll be eligible for the rebate if your battery is installed on or after 1 July 2025 by a certified installer. Make sure you get a certificate of electrical compliance to qualify.
🧾 Are There Other Rebates Too?
Yes! Additional rebates may be available from your state or territory, and they can often be combined with the federal program – making batteries even more affordable.
