As more Australian households invest in solar batteries, homeowners are looking for more than simply storing excess solar energy. Reliable backup power, easier installation and smarter energy management are becoming increasingly important.

Sungrow’s new EnergyBridge is designed to address some of these needs, offering a more compact way to integrate backup power into residential solar and battery systems.

What Is Sungrow EnergyBridge?

EnergyBridge is a compact backup power device designed to work alongside compatible Sungrow residential solar and battery systems.

It comes in two versions:

  • EB80S for single-phase homes
  • EB80T for three-phase homes

EnergyBridge helps manage the transition between grid power and backup power when the electricity supply is interrupted.

Rather than installing multiple separate components, Sungrow has combined several functions into one device, including a changeover switch, circuit breaker, energy meter, bypass switch and current transformer.

A Smaller, Simpler Installation

One of the main features of EnergyBridge is its compact design.

Sungrow says the device can be installed directly onto a standard DIN rail inside the home’s distribution board. This can help reduce the amount of additional equipment and wall space required for a backup system.

The company says EnergyBridge can be up to 99% smaller than conventional box-type backup gateways, with the device occupying approximately 4–6 poles in the switchboard.

For homeowners, this could mean a cleaner and less intrusive installation, particularly where space around the switchboard is limited.

Fast Backup Switching

EnergyBridge is designed to provide rapid switching when the grid goes down.

Sungrow states that the system can switch from grid power to backup power in 10 milliseconds or less.

When combined with a compatible Sungrow battery and inverter system, this allows the home to continue receiving power from its stored energy during a grid outage.

However, the amount of power available during a blackout will depend on the home’s battery capacity, inverter and electrical loads.

Designed for Single-Phase and Three-Phase Homes

According to Sungrow, EnergyBridge can support whole-home loads of up to 18.4kW on single-phase systems and 55.2kW on three-phase systems. The EB80T three-phase model is rated at up to 80 amps.

These figures don’t mean every household will be able to run all appliances during a blackout. The overall system needs to be designed around the home’s electrical supply, battery capacity and energy requirements.

Professional system design and installation remain important when choosing a battery backup solution.

How Does It Work With Solar and Batteries?

EnergyBridge forms part of a larger Sungrow residential energy system.

A typical setup may look like:

Solar panels → Hybrid inverter → Battery storage → EnergyBridge → Home

During the day, solar energy can power the home while excess energy is stored in the battery.

When solar generation isn’t enough to meet household demand, stored battery energy can be used to help power the home.

If the grid goes down, EnergyBridge helps manage the transition to backup operation as part of the overall system.

This gives homeowners another layer of energy security while allowing them to make greater use of their stored solar energy.

Why Is This Important?

As battery storage becomes more common across Australia, the technology surrounding batteries is also evolving.

EnergyBridge is an example of manufacturers focusing not just on battery capacity, but on making complete systems smaller, simpler and easier to integrate into the home.

For homeowners considering solar and battery storage, products like EnergyBridge could make backup power a more streamlined part of the overall installation.

Is EnergyBridge Suitable for Every Home?

Not necessarily.

The right battery and backup solution depends on factors including:

  • Whether the home is single-phase or three-phase
  • Existing solar and inverter equipment
  • Battery size
  • Switchboard capacity
  • Household energy consumption
  • Which appliances need backup power

A qualified solar and electrical installer can assess the property and determine which system is compatible and suitable.
